Our restaurant specialises in local produce. The South West of England is blessed with wonderful supplies of fresh meat, fish and vegetables direct from the farmer, fisherman or grower as well as a host of small artisan producers of cheese, ice cream, chocolates and smoked products to name but a few.
At Bearslake Inn food is very important to us. Our kitchen is run by Tom Cross who, with his team of dedicated professionals, like to cook from fresh using local ingredients, making as much as they can, including the stocks for our gravy and sauces.
Our shopping criteria are simple; best quality, locally produced, if not local then English and if we need to, we look further afield; after all we are not yet growing lemons in Okehampton or Devon!
The Restaurant
The Stable Restaurant is our main ala carte restaurant seating up to 40 people. Crisp white table cloths, napkins and comfy high backed chairs combine to create a special atmosphere whether your dining occasion is an intimate dinner for two or larger group.
Children are welcome in the restaurant but for the comfort of all our guests and without wishing to sound too old fashioned, we do ask parents to maintain an appropriate level of supervision.
In the evening we serve our ala carte menu in the Dartmoor Room. This is the old part of the building 16th century with granite walls and a lovely fireplace.
The Menu
In keeping with our ethos of local sourcing of ingredients our menu is predominately English or even West Country in style and not pretentious. We cook good honest food that we like to present as well as we can to tempt your taste buds into action.
At lunchtimes we offer a bar snack menu which includes a range of baguettes, sandwiches and salads as well as a lunch menu for those who prefer something more substantial. This menu is not available in the evening.
In the evening we offer an ala carte menu. Please click here to see a sample menu. Please note, we change our menu regularly so don't be surprised if the dishes on this sample menu have been replaced by something even more tempting.
We also offer a vegetarian menu.
Please let us know if you have any food allergies likes or dislikes that we need to be aware of. We cook from fresh and will do all that we can to accommodate your needs.
The Wine List
Our wines are all sourced from Charles Steevenson wines in Tavistock. Charles has been trading as an independent wine merchant for over twenty years. Charles is acknowledged as an expert in his field and a true character to boot!
We have chosen a range of wines from across the world with a range of grape varieties, styles and prices which we hope you will enjoy.
The Snug bar
Through the front door and turn to your right and you will find the Snug bar. The bar itself was made for us by Jeffrey and Pengelly a local firm of specialist joiners; the top is European Oak and the front Elm. This fine wooden structure now supports (literally) a wide range of beers wines and spirits for you to enjoy.
Devon has several small breweries all making beer of outstanding quality. We primarily stock ales from the Otter Brewery in Honiton and Teignworthy Brewery Newton Abbot as we have found these to be most popular with our customers. The quality and freshness of our beer is as important to us as the quality and freshness of our food which is why we were so pleased two years ago when we were first recognised by CAMRA (the campaign for real ale) and included in the good beer guide. We intend to be there for years to come.
We carry all the usual spirit brands and at the last count eighteen different malt whiskies representing all the whisky regions in Scotland as well as fine cognac, armangac and a host of liqueurs for you to enjoy.

We have many years experience of organising and running functions and have always found that things go smoothest on the night, with less stress for the organiser, if the event is planned in some detail. The guest list, timing, drinks on arrival, drinks with meal, the menu, the seating plan, speeches; it is not an endless list but your event will be all the easier for you and for us if we discuss these things in advance. Having said all of that the needs of every group are different so please give Christine a call, we will be happy to help.
Our Suppliers
"we like to cook using fresh local ingredients"
For this to be possible we need to work closely with our suppliers to make sure that we are able to source from them products that are local to us. I am sure there are times when they get fed up with our endless questions "where does this come from?" "who grows this?" "who caught this?" "which farm?" but they are a good bunch and very understanding of what we are trying to achieve. So a big thank you to all of them.
